Description Cooperators from the Gifford Pinchot National Forest assist in a prescribed burn on Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The prescribed fire was conducted to enhance upland wildlife habitat and improve forest resiliency. Ames’ milk-vetch is a state endangered plant found on the Refuge and adjacent lands, representing the only population in Washington. Ames’ milk-vetch is found in open ponderosa pine habitat and germinates on disturbed ground with little forest litter. Historically, periodic fires maintained open ponderosa pine forests free of shrubs and forest litter. However, fire suppression during the last century has limited available habitat for the Ames’ milk-vetch. The use of prescribed fire is one management tool used for the benefit of the plant species.
