Description U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) entomologist Dr. Jeff Pettis examines a bee colony at Paramount Farms in McFarland, CA on , Feb. 25, 2014. Bees are one of nature’s many pollinators for flowers and crops and are crucial in production for fruits and vegetables. Some of the crops pollinated by bees are apples, squash, and almonds. Honeybees are responsible for pollinating approximately $15 billion worth of crops in the U. S. each year. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) are working on ways to mitigate the decline of the bee population by coordinating pollination research, conservation, and education among USDA agencies and their partners.
