Summary
[edit]DescriptionUSAG Ansbach, DeCA, USACE open greenest commissary to date (8449283719).jpg | Representatives from Defense Commissary Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District, Installation Management Command Europe and the U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach community attended the grand opening of a new commissary, the greenest to date, Feb. 5, 2012 in Urlas, Germany. The 46,000-sq-foot commissary incorporates many sustainable design and energy-saving features such as a green roof. The undisturbed environment atop the commissary will provide an ecological protection layer – absorbing rainwater, providing insulation and creating a habitat for wildlife. The green roof requires little maintenance, improves energy-savings, and increases the life of the roof, thus saving taxpayer dollars over the life of the facility. Additional sustainable highlights of the commissary include: high-efficiency heating, air conditioning, and heat recovery systems; skylights to capitalize on natural light; photovoltaic power generation system; water-conserving landscaping; auto sensor lighting controls and utility metering.
