Description Spc. Kody Hansen, his wife, Mary, and son, David, are assigned the first Urlas housing quarters during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 14, 2011. The Urlas family housing area is a unique new community comprised of 106 units, 22 of which are low-energy Passivhäuser or “Passive Houses.” The PasivHaus units consume only one quarter of the energy demanded by traditional homes. The additional 84 units adhere to strict German EnEV energy standards, making the entire Urlas community environmentally sustainable. Construction of the Urlas housing community is being managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photo by Brian Temple)
