VIEWING INTO THE SPECIMEN LOADING PORT OF THE STEM. SPECIMENS ARE LOADED INTO A CARTRIDGE WHICH IS BOLTED TO THE TOP OF THE SPECIMEN CHANGER. THIS FACILITY, OPERATED BY BNL'S BIOLOGY DEPT., ACTUALLY INCLUDES TWO CUSTOM BUILT ELECTRON MICROSCOPES STEM 1 AND STEM 3. BOTH POWERFUL DEVICES ARE OPTIMIZED FOR IMAGING BIOLOGICAL MOLECULES WITH MINIMAL RADIATION DAMAGE. STEM IS USED BY MORE THAN 50 SCIENTIST EACH YEAR WHO CAN STUDY INTRICATE DETAILS OF LIVING THINGS, FROM BACTERIA TO HUMAN TISSUE.
