THE MARK II DRIFT CHAMBER. THE MAIN TRACKING COMPONENT IS SHOWN HERE DURING THE PROCESS OF ASSEMBLY. THIS STEP CONSISTS MAINLY OF THE RUNNING OF THOUSANDS OF FINE WIRES FROM ONE END OF THE CHAMBER TO THE OTHER (ABOUT 10 FEET). THE MARK II DETECTOR FACILITY WAS BUILT BY THE CONTINUING COLLABORATION BETWEEN SLAC AND LBL AND INCORPORATES SEVERAL NEW DETECTOR TECHNOLOGIES PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE. IT WAS CONSTRUCTED TO ENABLE THE STUDY OF THE ELECTRON-POSITRON ANNIHILATION PROCESS WITH HIGHER PRECISION THAN ITS PREDECESSOR, THE MARK I MAGNETIC DETECTOR.
