Description
English: On the morning of July 17, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Typhoon Talim barreling towards a landfall in southeastern China.

Typhoon Talim made landfall only a few hours later near Zhanjiang City in southern Guangdong province carrying maximum sustained winds near 85 mph (137 km/h). This is the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Talim spun westward over land, reaching the Beibu Gulf, crossed it, then made a second landfall over the southern Guangxi region on the evening of July 17 before moving over Vietnam.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) issued its last advisory on Talim early in the morning of July 18, when the storm’s maximum sustained winds had dropped to 70 mph (112.6 km/h). At that time, Tropical Storm Talim was located about 197 miles (317 km) north-northeast of Hanoi, Vietnam and was tracking west-northwestward. The storm is expected to dissipate over land by July 19.

The storm was a heavy rain-maker, and brought flooding, travel disruptions, and downed trees along its short-lived travels, especially near the site of landfall in Guangdong province. Media reports include water rescues from flooded regions, trees falling on vehicles, and even a beached whale stranded on the coast.
