Summary
[edit]DescriptionTwo aurochs fighting- you can hardly make out the one on the right (37122596681).jpg | Look, two aurochs fighting, my guide Ibrahim informed me rather excitedly. (aurochs is a type of ox, now extinct). I can certainly make out one of them, the one nearest camera. His opponent can also be seen but rather faintly. It took me quite a while to spot the other aurochs at the far end. Archaeological teams have identified and documented approximately 3,500 individual rock paintings on 750 rocks around 1940-1965 . According to the findings, the most ancient petroglyphs belong to the 12-8th century B.C. However, it is assumed that life existed here even earlier and that, as Gobustan is considered as one of the cradles of civilization. This research was published in a book entitled 'Gobustan' in 1978. Moroever, in 1948 during the Gobustan expedition, the author of this book (name not revealed) discovered rock inscriptions in Latin, near mountain Boyukdash, some 70 km from Baku. This was the easternmost region in the world where evidence of Roman civilization is known. Petroglyphs from Gobustan are depicted on the reverse of the Azerbaijani 5 manat banknote issued since 2006. (Gobustan, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017) |
