Image title | Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley (right) and Mrs. Jacqueline Weathers (left) look on as her husband, retired Lt. Col. Luke Weathers describes the action depicted in a painting heralding the unblemished record of the famed 332nd Fighter Group of Tuskegee Airman which Colonel Weathers and General Moseley unveiled during a ceremony in the Pentagon, June 24, 2004. In the painting artist Mickey Harris depicted then Lieutenant Weathers at the controls of his P-51 Mustang escorting a damaged B-24 Liberator back to England following a bombing mission in Germany. In the distance are Nazi Bf-109 fighter planes closing in to finish off the bomber. During the encounter Lieutenant Weathers was able to score two enemy kills and chase the other attack planes away continuing the 332nd's perfect record of never lossing a bomber, entrusted to their protection, to enemy forces during World War II. Mr. Harris and Colonel Weathers met during a similar ceremony at the Pentagon two years ago when Harris's Memphis Belle painting was unveiled. During the chance meeting Mr. Harris became intrigued with the feats of the Tuskegee Airman as Colonel Weathers decribed the mission that the artist ended up choosing to depict. Also unveiled during the ceremony was a portrait of Lieutenant Weathers which was painted by Mr. Harris's son Matthew. General Moseley told those gathered for the unveiling, which included several members of congress, Air Force Secretary James G. Roche, senior Air Force officials and other Tuskegee Airman members and their families that the legacy and history of the Tuskegee Airman continues to live in current operations throughout the world. General Moseley thanked the historic airmen for all they did and what they taught us. (U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt. Jim Varhegyi) (released) |
