Summary
[edit]DescriptionTugtupite fluorescing (Ilímaussaq Complex, Mesoproterozoic, 1.16 Ga; Taseq Slope, Greenland).jpg |
English: Alkaline syenite from the Precambrian of Greeland.
The red-glowing mineral in this rock is tugtupite, a rare beryllium silicate mineral, Na4BeAlSi4O12Cl - sodium beryllium chloro-aluminosilicate. The glow is caused by tugtupite fluorescence under ultraviolet light (black light). Why do some minerals fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light? When short-wavelength UV radiation, long-wavelength UV radiation, or x-rays bombard atoms, electron excitation occurs. The electrons do not remain in an energetically excited state - they quickly give off energy and resume their normal energy levels. If the electron energy release is in the visible spectrum of light, a mineral glows, or fluoresces. Geologic unit: Ilímaussaq Complex, late Mesoproterozoic, 1.16 Ga Locality: unrecorded site on Taseq Slope, near Lake Taseq, far-southern Greenland (? vicinity of 60° 57' 15" North latitude, 45° 56' 35" West longitude) |
