[edit]DescriptionTropical Storm Kirk (MODIS 2018-10-01).jpg |
English: On September 27, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Storm Kirk as it approached the Lesser Antilles.
At the time this image was captured, the system was fighting wind shear and was beginning to elongate. At 11:00 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC) the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that the center of Tropical Storm Kirk was located near latitude 13.8 degrees north and longitude 59.3 degrees west. That’s about 45 miles (70 km) north-northwest of Barbados. Kirk was moving toward the west-northwest near 15 mph (24 km/h) and this general motion with a slight decrease in forward speed was expected to continue over the next few days. Maximum sustained winds were near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical Storm Kirk formed on September 22 off the west coast of Africa near Sierra Leone. It quickly moved westward across the Atlantic Ocean but lost steam almost as quickly. By September 24, as Kirk crossed the central Atlantic, the NHC noted that it lacked the closed circulation that is required for tropical cyclone status and downgraded it to a tropical depression. Kirk reorganized on September 26, regaining Tropical Storm status. The storm reached peak strength that day, with maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph (95 km/h). Kirk struggled with increasing wind shear and on September 29, the NHC issued its last advisory on the remnants of Kirk as it brought rains and some flooding to the Windward Islands. |
