Scattered trees with broad, leafy canopies shade areas of turf, between rows of uniform grave markers.

Cemetery superintendents planted a variety of evergreen and hardwood trees in the cemetery through the decades. Many of the existing trees within the lawn areas of Fort Donelson National Cemetery date to the 1940 NPS planting plan or are replacements located according to this plan.
