Summary
[edit]DescriptionTree fern (Dicksonia antarctica) - detail - geograph.org.uk - 790280.jpg |
English: Tree fern (Dicksonia antarctica) - detail Tree ferns (the plant shown here is Dicksonia antarctica and originates from Tasmania) are ancient trees; they were introduced into Great Britain by ships that carried the plants as ballast on returning from Australia. On reaching the first landfall and harbour, which was Penzance in Cornwall, they dumped them. The exotic plants were thriving, however, and soon local landowners claimed them for use in their gardens and parks.
Priory Gardens are situated on the grounds of the former St Mary's priory, the ruins of which can be seen from across the gardens. Opened in 1997 and presently featuring a number of gardens such as an aromatic garden, a romantic garden, Norfolk, Riviera and Tea gardens as well as a variety of walks; there are also a beech hedge maze, a plant centre, a tea room and a gift shop. |
