La FDA aprobó muchos tratamientos que contribuyen a que los niños asmáticos lleven una vida activa. La mayoría de los medicamentos para el asma son inhalados, ya sea (2) a través de una máscara para niños muy pequeños, o mediante (3) un pequeño dispositivo llamado inhalador. Para los inhaladores, los médicos también podrían prescribir (4) un dispositivo llamado espaciador. El espaciador se ajusta al inhalador para asegurarse de que la dosis correcta de medicamento ingrese en los pulmones del niño. Los medicamentos de “rescate” tratan síntomas severos, mientras que los medicamentos “de control” previenen o alivian los síntomas. Además, los proveedores de cuidados para la salud podrían recomendar el uso de (5) un medidor de flujo máximo para controlar en qué medida está funcionando el tratamiento de un niño.
