Português: Traseiras do Hospício Princesa D. Maria Amélia. Alvenaria de pedra rebocada e cantaria aparente, 1860 (c.). A instituição do Hospício Princesa D. Maria Amélia foi feita pela ex-imperatriz do Brasil, D. Amélia de Beauharnais Leuchetenberg, em memória da filha, falecida no Funchal 4 de Fevereiro de 1853. O projecto tinha sido encomendado em Inglaterra ao arquitecto F. B. Lamb, mas no Funchal foi francamente alterado pelo engenheiro e arquitecto João Figueirôa de Freitas e Albuquerque, de forma a se adaptar ao local adquirido e às especificidades na área médica a que deveria obedecer. D. Amélia veio a falecer em 1873, legando a administração do Hospício à sua irmã Josefina, rainha da Suécia, alegando que administrações daquele tipo não deveriam ter maioria de elementos portugueses ou brasileiros. Desde então passaram os reis da Suécia a ser os administradores daquela instituição. Cento e cinquenta anos depois, a rainha da Suécia e administradora titular do Hospício seria de origem brasileira. |
