Summary

[edit]
Description
English: An odd juxtaposition in Bowmansville, New York, as seen in April 2021: (from left to right) a water tower, recently-constructed four-story hotel building, and Salvatore's Italian Gardens restaurant serve as an anachronistic backdrop for the historic Transit Rural Cemetery at 5169 Genesee Street. The sign outside the gate says that it was founded in 1873, but the site was almost certainly used as a cemetery long before then, as records indicate burials for people who died as early as 1830 (namely Mary, wife of local farmer Ara Green). The hamlet of Bowmansville represents the earliest settlement in the Town of Lancaster, dating to 1803 and long gathered around Benjamin Bowman's saw- and grist mills on the shore of Ellicott Creek, the latter of which is still extant and home of the R. E. Kelley contracting company.
