Aston.—Raised Beaches of Cape Turakirae. 209 A large boulders 3 ft. to 8 ft. in diameter, but running roughly parallel withthe sea throughout the length of the boulder-strewn plain are two excellentlydefined shingle beaches. These stand out most conspicuously, and formnatural roadways along which one may drive. For the greater part theshingle presents an appearance differing little from that of beaches whichoften exist now at the oceans marge. In many places the shingle is, how-ever, overgrown with Muehlenbeckia corrvplcxa, or with grasses and otherplants. The main impression left on ones mind is that marvellously littlealteration has taken place in the peopling of these areas by plants, and inthe external appearance of the shingle generally, in the hundreds of yearswhich have probably elapsed since each was rapidly elevated. The survivalof the beaches as shingle involves the fact that it is composed of the harderportions of the country rock, and which would hence, in the equablecli
