The manor of Bitton at the time of the Survey, 1086, was held, as ithad been in the Confessors time, by a Saxon Thane called Dons. He wasprobably the Dunne or Duns who before the Conquest held manors in BiTTON Church. 59 Rockhampton, Stoke, and Brimpsfield, and who was compelled by theConqueror to surrender them to Osbern Giffard. But the church of Bitton, which gave its name and probably its endow-ment to a prebendal stall in the cathedral church of St. Mary, Salisbury,held one hide of land in the parish. Moreover, a large portion of Bittonwas included in the ancient forest of Kingswood; but it was disafforestedin the time of Henry III., the King preserving a certain portion as a royalchase. At the accession of Henry II., Bitton was held by Adam dAmneville,who had two sons, Robert de Hanham and Roberf de Bitton. The formerwas the ancestor of the Blunts, who held half the manor till the reign ofHenry VIII., when it was sold to Sir Maurice Berkeley in 1515. Fromthe latter were descende
