Description

Situada no alto de uma colina, Trancoso, a antiga aldeia de São João Batista do Índios, é considerada um dos últimos lugares conservados dos primeiros povoados brasileiros.

Fundada em 1586 com a finalidade de defender a região dos contrabandistas de pau-brasil que chegavam pelo litoral, nasceu em torno de um retângulo

A Igreja de São João Batista fica em uma das extremidades e local é cercado de casinhas baixas e geminadas, construídas em linha reta, formando uma grande praça: o quadrado, um dos sítios históricos mais importantes da Costa do Descobrimento.

Hoje o quadrado continua inalterado, com todas as suas construções tombadas pelo patrimônio histórico.
