English: The Tramway de Royan with sacks of flour, that were washed ashore, when the ship "D/S PETER JEBSEN (JVRM)" sank nearby. On 28 March 1917, in a time of famine, the Norwegian ship Peter Jebsen, loaded with 4,000 tonnes of flour bound for Bordeaux, was caught in a storm and ran aground on the sandbank near Cordouan. In the days that followed, sacks of flour were found all along the coast of Royandy, and the public were allowed to pick them up on the beach". 280 bales of flour ran aground on the large conch of SGD. The mayor, Simon Eugène PELLETAN, was unable to pay for the collection and sifting of this flour using the commune's own funds, and he sent a telegram by post to the Prefect who, by return and by the same means, sent him his agreement.
The person in the black suit might be Jules LEHUCHER, the director of the SGTR, who was replaced in 1923 by Albert Nougarède. |
