Title |
toy hammer (profile) |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete copper alloy toy in the form of a miniature hammer, missing the rounded 'peen' at the back to offset the expanded face of the head of the hammer, which is 8 mm in diameter. The side of the head and the haft or handle have a pattern of crosses in the form of an 'X' running vertically down them, perhaps meant to look like the leather binding on a wooden haft. The haft tapers to a point but has been worn into this shape and looks as if the bottom half of the haft has been exposed to more air and perhaps water to have worn away the original surface. There are patches of black lacquer over most of the surface which would have been painted on to the copper alloy to stop corrosion during use. One other toy hammer is recorded on the database, in record SUSS-3BE745, but this example is somewhat smaller. The style of the hammer and its use as a toy suggests that it was made during the 19th century. |
