Title
Towton 16a; probably medieval horseshoe
Description
English: Part of an iron horseshoe, probably dating from the medieval period. It is 114.8mm long, 27.9mm wide and 5.8mm thick. It weighs 76.35g. The horseshoe has a slight calkin (turned up area at the end), a fuller (groove in which the nails fit) and 4 nail holes surviving. These are rectangular. Less than half of the shoe survives. It probably dates from the 14th or 15th century. It was found on Towton Battlefield, so it may have been lost in 1461. See Medieval Horseshoes by John Clark, FRG datasheet number 4.
