English: nscrita na lista do Património Mundial da UNESCO, a Torre de Belém (ou Torre de S. Vicente a par de Belém) é um ex-libris do património cultural português projetado em todo o mundo e um dos elementos arquitetónicos que pontua a paisagem ribeirinha na zona monumental Ajuda-Belém. Construída em homenagem ao Santo Patrono de Lisboa, S. Vicente, a Torre de Belém fazia parte de um sistema de defesa tripartida entre o baluarte de Cascais e a fortaleza de S. Sebastião da Caparica, na margem oposta do rio. A decoração da Torre ostenta a simbologia própria do manuelino – cordas que envolvem o edifício rematando em elegantes nós, esferas armilares, cruzes da Ordem Militar de Cristo e elementos naturalistas.
Construída estrategicamente na margem norte do rio Tejo entre 1514 e 1520, sob orientação de Francisco de Arruda, a Torre de Belém é uma das jóias da arquitetura do reinado de D. Manuel I. O monumento faz uma síntese entre a torre de menagem de tradição medieval e o baluarte, mais largo, com a sua casamata onde se dispunham os primeiros dispositivos aptos para resistir ao fogo de artilharia. Ao longo do tempo a Torre de Belém foi perdendo a sua função de defesa da barra do Tejo e, a partir da ocupação filipina, os antigos paióis deram lugar a masmorras.
