Summary

[edit]
Description

Tourists lined up at the entrance to the Torre de Belém.

The Torre de Belém was built both as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon and as part of a defensive system at the entrance to Rio Tejo. The shore of Belém had been protected by a ship, the Grande Nau, but it was replaced by this tower during the last five years of the reign of King Manuel I (1469-1521). The Torre de Belém was dedicated to the patron saint of Lisbon, São Vicente.
