[edit]DescriptionToro Muerto Petroglyphs, Peru (1972) (457841149).jpg |
These petroglyphs are at the site of Toro Muerto in southern Peru. The site is in a desert in the Majes valley about 170 km from Arequipa. Some archaeologists believe the carvings were made by the Wari culture over 1,000 years ago, and perhaps added to by subsequent societies. I took these photos when I visited Toro Muerto in 1972. I understand the site has suffered destruction since then, and is threatened by development today. A few descriptions I have read recently say the carvings are widely scattered and are few and far between. This differs from my recollection of 35 years ago. It seemed to me there were petroglyphs everwhere you looked. |
