Description
Deutsch: Die DLR-Stereokamera HRSC auf der ESA-Mission Mars Express nimmt mit ihren neun quer zur Nord-Süd-Flugrichtung angeordneten Sensoren die Marsoberfläche unter verschiedenen Winkeln und mit vier Farbkanälen auf. Aus den vier schräggestellten Stereokanälen und dem senkrecht auf den Mars gerichteten Nadirkanal berechnen Wissenschaftlerteams am DLR-Institut für Planetenforschung und der Freien Universität Berlin digitale Geländemodelle, die jedem Bildpunkt eine Höheninformation zuordnen. An der Farbskala rechts oben im Bild lassen sich die Höhenunterschiede ablesen. Die Tantalus Fossae sind ein gigantisches Netz aus Grabenbrüchen, die den Vulkan Alba Patera umgeben. Das Gebiet im nördlichen (rechten) Teil des Bildes liegt viel tiefer als der südliche Teil. Der Einschlagskrater in der Mitte ist älter als die Gräben, da sie ihn ebenfalls durchschneiden.
