Summary
[edit]DescriptionToboggan ride (31690252528).jpg |
Starting in 1850 toboggans made of wicker were used for quick transport from the village of Monte, Madeira, downhill into the city. For many years now they have been used by thousands of tourists for a safe but thrilling 2 Km (1.25 miles) ride. One is seen here on the way down. The two-seater toboggans have wooden runners so they do not damage the road surface and are controlled by two men who are traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat. They use their rubber-soled boots as brakes. This being February they had jackets on over their white tops. |
