English: From a set of representations of Native American life from all over the country, created by Dr. Robert S. Butsch, in 1959 for the Exhibit Museum of Natural History in Ann Arbor, MI.
This diorama represents Tlingit life in the 1700's. The Tlingit lived and still live along the northwest coast of Canada and southern Alaska. The coastal climate at this northern latitude is surprisingly warm and wet. Tlingit artists carve totem poles from large cedar logs. Ravens, bears and people are depicted on poles. Totem poles have many meanings A totem pole in front of a longhouse signifies the owner's ancestry. In cemeteries, totem poles honor the dead. In front of the village, a totem pole celebrates a community's history and its protective spirits. |
