Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Titanium (Ti) is # 22 on the Periodic Table of Elements. Elemental titanium is a silvery-gray metal. Titanium is produced from ore minerals such as ilmenite and rutile. Ilmenite is FeTiO3, iron titanium oxide. It is a high-temperature mineral that occurs in most igneous rocks in minor quantities. Ilmenite is mined from nelsonite, an intrusive igneous rock associated with anorthosite complexes. Ilmenite is also concentrated in some placer deposits ("black sands"). Rutile is TiO2, titanium oxide. It is common in igneous rocks as small grains, but also occurs in placer deposits, such as beach sands. Top rutile producers are placer sand deposits in Australia and South Africa. Some Florida sands are also rich in titanium.

Titanium is alloyed with other elements to produce strong, lightweight materials with high melting points - this is used in industry, the military (for airplanes), and space programs.

Twenty-six isotopes of titanium are known. Five occur naturally. Titanium-48 is the most common variety. The other isotopes each make up between 5 and 10% of Ti atoms: titanium-46, titanium-47, titanium-49, and titanium-50.
