Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tiny house Surely the smallest house in Dartmouth? For many years I have wondered about this little house nestling in the rocks, and marvelled that it doesn't get demolished by a storm at high tide. Perhaps someone can help with its history?

Gunfield Bathing House. The building lies in a small cove on the castle side of what was once the Gunfield hotel. It was built by the grandfather of a Mr Tewe as a private bathing house for the owners of the hotel to enable the lady of the house to take salt water baths to aid her arthritis. There is a fireplace and a chimney in the building so the butler could heat up water for her beforehand, whether it was so she could soak in warm salt water or to warm her up once out of the river we are not sure.

To the east of this little building is a larger house which was built as a Dartmouth’s first and only public bathhouse built in 1856. It was a project ahead of its time, cited too far from the town centre. This later became the gardener’s cottage for the Castle Estate before being sold off by the District Council. Note: There are no fresh water streams in the vicinity of this property, it is possible that it was built to give access to the sea for bathing in salt water courtesy of Dartmouth History.org
