Description
English: This timeline illustrates the development of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and its different names:
  • 1865: Founding of the "American Social Science Association" (ASSA)
  • 1898: The ASSA produces the "National Institute of Arts, Science and Letters".
  • 1900: The latter dropped the Science from its name and became an independent association, henceforth called "National Institute of Arts and Letters".
  • 1904: Beginning of a two-tiered organisation, divided into the Institute and the Academy, which was the association's "elite" part and inner core.
  • 1907: The ASSA, the Association from which had emenated the Institute/Academy, held their last meeting. The number of members was increased to 250 (200 Institute; 50 Academy).
  • 1976: The two-tiered system was constrained by combining the board of directors and the budget. The internal division into Institute and Academy persisted. Thus, the organisation was called "American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters".
  • 1993: The two-tiered system was abandoned and the name "American Academy of Arts and Letters" has been existing since.
