Tide Mills Village

| Description |
English: Tide Mills Village Viewed from the site of the former mill. Whilst the mill may have been demolished in 1900 the village that grew up around it continued to operate. The ruins beyond the creek were turned into horse stables during the 1920s in order to rehabilitate race horses by getting them to run in the sea at low tides. A number of the cottages continued to be inhabitated until 1934 when the lack of sanitation and other utilities enabled the local council to condemn them. The last inhabitants were forcibly evicted in 1940 and the buildings destroyed so that the British Army could have a clear field of fire should the Wehrmacht choose Seaford Bay as a landing point.
Beyond the ruins to the left the concrete boards of the former Bishopstone Beach station can be made out whilst in the background is the modern suburb of Bishopstone built on Rookery Hill. |
