nd this seemed to presenta few less difflculties than the river valley. There was acurious hill near the camp, rising like a pyramid from theriver valley, and on the top of this was a mass of glisteningwhite quartz. The principal stone to be found in thiscountry is a coarse granite, and volcanic rock. We spenta whole day hard at work, getting the camels up thedonkey path. The road led up the steepest and stoniestmountain passes one could possibly imagine. We suc-ceeded in ascending fifteen hundred feet, but the camelswere in a terrible condition, even those that were notloaded coming into camp almost too tired to walk. Themountains were covered with euphorbias, instead of theumbrella mimosa-trees we had been accustomed to seelately, and the underbrush was very dense, comprisingdifferent varieties of acacia, cactus, and aloe. We camped by a small brook of clear water runningtowards the Galana, in which I caught a small fish resem-bling a chub. There was much micaceous grit on the banks

ON THE TERTALA PLATEAU LANDS. 243 of this Stream, and I was surprised to see my two Tertalaguides cover their bodies with the sand, so that theyglistened like a doll on a Christmas tree. The next day we managed to reach the high plateauland, and to march as far as a large settlement of TertalaBoran called Lenja. There were over twenty villagesscattered about a small valley, comprising in all some twothousand huts. As we reached our camping-place by asmall, muddy pool of water, we were met by the chiefs ofthe villages, who promised us every assistance. I sawlarger herds of cattle here than I have seen anywhereoutside of Texas. They must have numbered over tenthousand. I told the natives that King Abofilato hadpromised me a handsome present, but that now, since hehad not sent it, they must bring plenty of their animalsto me to trade.
