GIC DOOR As we close it, the club-room is beforeus, and the table on which stand the omeletfor Nugent, and the lemons for Johnson. There are assembled those heads which livefor ever on the canvas of Eeynolds. Thereare the spectacles of Burke, and the tallthin form of Langton, the courtly sneer ofBeauclerk and the beaming smile of Gar-rick, Gibbon tapping his snuff-box, and SirJoshua with his trumpet in his ear. In theforeground is that strange figure which is asfamiliar to us as the figures of those amongwhom we have been brought up—the giganticbody, the huge massy face, seamed with thescars of disease, the brown coat, the blackworsted stockings, the grey wig with thescorched foretop, the dirty hands, the nail3bitten and pared to the quick. We see theeyes and mouth moving with convulsivetwitches; we see the heavy form rolling;we hear it puffing, and then comes the ■ Why,sir! and the What then, sir ? and the No, sir! and the You dont see your waythrough the question, sir! ; >>

Itwas the one great object of interest whichLondon held for me. And so it might wellbe, when I think of all I owe him. It isnot merely the knowledge and the stimulationof fresh interests, but it is the charminggentlemanly tone, the broad, liberal outlook, the general absence of bigotry and of pre-judice. My judgment now confirms all thatI felt for him then. My four-volume edition of the Historystands, as you see, to the right of the Essays.Do you recollect the third chapter of thatwork—the one which reconstructs the Englandof the seventeenth century? It has alwaysseemed to me the very high-water mark ofM
