at the futureof the city is secure, whatever temporary re-verses it may meet with. It is dominated fromall points of view by the snow-capped summitof Mount Ranier, the loftiest peak in the coastcountry. Its slopes are clothed with dense greenpine forests and its summit white with snow thewhole year round. What an inspiration it mustbe to those who see it daily and have in theirsouls enough of the poetical to feel the majestyand beauty of this sublimest of mountain peaks;glowing in the amber hues of morning, shroudedin the amethystine haze of sunset, bald andawful in the noonday glare, it stands always theembodiment of all that is most impressive andlovely in natural scenery. Nor can anyone say that he has seen thebest of the picturesque grandeur of the Ameri-can continent who has never visited the Cana-dian Northwest. Along the line of the CanadianPacific Railway is a succession of magnificentscenery which many contend is not surpassedby anything on the southern side of the border 174

> o Z E- M -° ^ -of OTHER WONDERS line. A daylight journey through the sectionaffords the opportunity of seeing the greaterpart of the scenic wonders, since the railwaypasses directly among them. There are moun-tains, canyons, lakes and mighty forests—all ona titanic scale that is indeed awe-inspiring. Thebeauty and grandeur seem to reach their culmi-nation in Lake Louise, and its surroundings, which is undoubtedly quite the equal of anymountain lake in the world. Old Mexico, which at the moment I writeis involved in the throes of a revolutionarystruggle, has been a favorite theme with ourartist, and few will realize how deservedly itsscenes have employed his brush save by a per-sonal visit to this Egypt of the West. Here arerelics of a civilization more ancient and advancedthan may be found elsewhere in America—a bar-barous civilization, perhaps, if the paradox maybe allowed, but none the less of entrancing inter-est. One would hardly expect to find in the so-called New World
