Title |
Three views of a Neolithic polished flint axe. |
||
Description |
English: The axe is a polished axe head dating to the Neolithic period, -3500 to -2100. Originally the axe would have been secured to a wooden handle. Jon Radley, Warwickshire Museum, has identified the axe as being knapped and polished flint. The flint is a pale mottled grey colour. In plan the axe is a rounded sub-rectangle which tapers towards the butt. The blade is a slightly irregular edge due to damage. There are negative scars, particularly on one which do not appear to be purposeful. In section the axe is a sub-oval. Off-centre towards the blade the axe in profile is humped on both faces. The hump is created by slightly chamfered sides and on the surfaces a change of angle in profile which tapers towards each other forming the blade. The butt has old feint negative scars which have not been fully polished away. The butt also has more recent scars which are likely to be damage.The axe measures 149.85mm long, 64.68mm wide across the blade and 36mm thick across the humped area. It weighs 376g. |
