35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Passeriformes; Family: Emberizidae; Genus: Paroaria; Genus species: Paroaria gularis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 16.5-18 cm; Identification: Red-capped cardinals have a black bill with the base of the mandible a yellowish flesh color. The head and chin are crimson red with a black smudge around the eye. The upperparts are glossy blue black and the underparts are white. The immature red-capped cardinals have a brown head, chin, and upperparts and white underparts; Habitat: Open forest, gallery forest, second growth, marshes, scrubs, and near water up to 300 meters; Diet: Omnivore: insects, seeds, berries; Reproduction: Three to four broods can be produced per year. The average number of chicks per brood is three but can be as many as five. Clutches produced later in the year usually only have two chicks. Incubation takes 12-13 days. The chicks leave the nest at 9-10 days; Social Structure: Red-capped cardinals are found in pairs or small groups; Behavior: Red-capped cardinals do not migrate; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: There is nothing in the range of the red-capped cardinal that resembles it.
