Six men of the Royal Marine Artillery pose with three 15-inch howitzer shells, each painted on the base "To Capt. Fryatt's Murderers".

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Artillerymen and shells, Western Front, during World War I. Six men of the Royal Marine Artillery, who can be identified by their grenade collar badges. They are sitting behind three 15-inch Howitzer shells, on each of which is painted, 'To Capt. Fryatts murderers'. It is perhaps ironic that these artillerymen are personalising the conflict. With the very large guns, they would have generally have been so far back that they rarely saw their targets.

As the war developed, long-range guns were designed which could fire accurately over the heads of their own side for distances of up to 11 miles (18 kilometres).
