Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Frenchwoman among the ruins of her home in Amiens, France, during World War I. Propaganda photographs that were staged for the official war photographers were not always as effective as more naturalistic pictures in communicating the emotions of war . This is one example. The old woman sitting on a chair in the bombed-out shell of her home looks self-conscious and seems to be attempting to smile for the camera. Rather than conveying her sense of loss, the picture merely makes the old woman look incongruous.

The city of Amiens, strategically important for its rail links, was a target of German forces on the Western Front throughout the war. It remained in French hands, but was shelled in the German Spring Offensive of 1918 and was only brought out of danger by the Allied counter-offensive which began in August 1918.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. The successful advance of 18/9/18. Civilians returning to Amiens. This old lady is sitting on ruins which were once her home.']
