| Description | I entered this beautiful old building full of expectation as my guide had told me that this was actually some kind of a harbourside resort of sorts in it's heydays. Not for sun seekers looking for a tan, but with the Caspian Sea just outside (not any longer, it's about 500mtr away now), people used this building to unload ships and store goods. The open areas were also used for trading and for a bit of relaxation. In reality, to my shock, this building was now actually a series of shops with predatory traders. We had been greeted by a bunch of guys who, as soon as we entered kept directing us to go that side, not this side etc. We thought these were museum caretakers telling us which way to go. Unfortunately, they turned out to be predatory shopkeepers, each one trying to direct you towards his shop! They all crowd at the entrance. They were not overly pushy, but having a local guide and being a single non-white male also helps a bit, I guess. (Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017) |
