Summary
[edit]DescriptionThirlmere straining well - geograph.org.uk - 1658016.jpg |
English: Thirlmere straining well The Thirlmere Aqueduct is a fine example of Victorian engineering.
Water is transferred to Manchester by gravity, which required a tunnel to be cut under Dunmail Raise (NY3211). The straining well originally contained gauze strainers which filtered the water before it entered the aqueduct. The water is now piped through the well which is dry. (See 1678353.) A stone, visible on the left side of the building, includes the following text: Manchester Corporation Waterworks - Thirlmere Scheme sanctioned by the City Council 4 July 1877. Authorized by Act of Parliament 23 May 1879. Works commenced in 1888 and completed in 1894. George Henry Hill - Engineer. |
