Description
English: Description provided by Ian W. Scott on Flickr:

Theatre of Dionysus, Athens

Just off stage left at the Theatre of Dionysus, Athens. The flat paved area in the foreground is the "chorus," named for the company of anonymous actors who occupied the space and comments formed part of every play. The theatre seating continues unexcavated under the turf and would originall have formed a complete semicircle up to the height of the grassy hill at the left-hand edge of the photo. The massive retaining wall in the background is the south-eastern end of the Acropolis. The pediment of the Parthenon (the great temple of Athena) is just barely visible above the top of the retaining wall. The stage of the theatre was originally built along the near edge of the chorus area, raised about three feet above the level of the ground. Today only fragments of the marble reliefs along the front of the stage survive.
