This sport, like, indeed, all others, is differentlypractised in different places, and by different persons.The best sample of it we ever enjoyed was in thewoods belonging to the Earl of Winterton, adjoininghis seat, Shillinglee Park, in Sussex, This noblemankeeps the most perfect pack of rabbit beagles pro-bably in existence, and goes out with them quite enprince. Having caused the covers he pm-poses shoot-ing to be stopped (after the fashion of fox-hunting),he sallies forth with his Lilliputian pack, cheers theminto cover, turns them with his horn, and, in short,carries on his rabbiting with all the pomp and circum-stance of perfect woodcraft. His hounds are aboutthe size of well-grown kittens, and as full of fireas lucifer matches. All kinds of rabbits, tame or wild, are in bestflavour from November till the commencement ofFebruary. Some naturalists contend that they prefer aseat above ground, and only burrow for the sake ofrefuge, in case they are in danger. This may bepartly true; as, also, that they use their burrows asshelter from inclement weather. Even the hare willburrow under the snow, when it lies deeply. It iscertain, that w4iere they enjoy quiet and privacy, theyare constantly to be seen above the surface, eventhough that be a warren. In their miscellaneousresorts, they select, as places to lie in, thick hedgerows;particularly those having furze or fern growing ontheir banks, and old, dry stone, or sand, pits, whosesides are overgrown with bramble and scrubby un-derwood.
