But there is really less need ofbold and skilful horsemanship than in the other-wise less attractive and more artificial sport offox-hunting, or riding to hounds, in a closed andlong-settled country. Those of us who are in part of southern bloodhave a hereditary right to be fond of cross-country riding; for our forefathers in Virginia,Georgia, or the Carolinas, have for six generationsfollowed the fox with horse, horn, and hound.In the long-settled Northern States the sport hasbeen less popular, though much more so now thanformerly; yet it has always existed, here andthere, and in certain places has been followedquite steadily. 1 tl Hunting with Hounds 167 than in the Genesee valley, in central New York.There has always been fox-hunting in this valley,the farmers having good horses and being fondof sport; but it was conducted in a very irregular,primitive manner, until some twenty years agoMr, Austin Wadsworth turned his attention toit. He has been master of fox-hounds ever since,and no pack in the country has yielded bettersport than his, or has brought out harder ridersamong the men and stronger jumpers among thehorses. Mr. Wadsworth began his hunting bypicking up some of the various trencher-fed houndsof the neighborhood, the hunting of that periodbeing managed on the principle of each farmerbringing to the meet the hound or hounds hehappened to possess, and appearing on foot orhorseback, as his fancy dictated. Having gottentogether some of these native hounds and startedfox-hunting in localities where the ground was soopen as to necessitate following the chase onhorseback, Mr. Wadsworth imported a number
