The sons-in-law of his step-mother referred to wereDennis Hanks and Levi Hall, who had married Sarahand Matilda, Lincolns step-sisters. Hanks was a son ofthe Joseph Hanks with whom Thomas Lincoln learnedthe carpenters trade in Kentucky. Another son, JohnHanks, was a member of the family, and it was he whoappeared at the State convention at Decatur, May 9,i860, bearing two weather-worn fence-rails decoratedwith streamers and a banner inscribed to the effect thatthey were from the identical lot of three thousand railswhich Lincoln had cut on the Sangamon River in 1830.This dramatic scene was devised by Richard J. Oglesby,afterwards Governor and United States Senator, andone of Lincolns most ardent admirers and faithful sup-porters. Delegates had been elected to the second NationalRepublican Convention to be held at Chicago a weeklater, when Mr. Oglesby arose and announced in aserious and mysterious manner that an old citizen ofMacon County had something to present to the Conven-tion. Then, with great dramatic effect, John Hanksentered, bearing the relics which were to become thesymbols of the National Convention. The assembly wastransformed into a tumult, and Lincoln was brought tothe platform, where, when order could be restored, hesaid,— Gentlemen: I suppose you want to know somethingabout those things.
