lower has a vertical travel of 4 ft. 9 in., so that the floor of theplatform is at a height of 16 ft. above the track level when it is inits highest position. The clearance height above the rail when thetower is lowered is 12 ft. 3 in. The working platform is 12 ft. 7 in. long .x 4 ft. 6 in. wide, andwhen swung out extends 10 ft. 3 in. from the center line of track.Its construction is light and strong, consisting of three 4-in. x ij^-in.longitudinal pieces with cross pieces of the same size at the endsand a J^-in. truss rod on each side resting on a 12-in. king-post. Railings 2 ft. high, hinged to fold down when not in use, areprovided on the sides. This square of limbersfupports at eight points the swivelling platform and a forging atthe intersection of two lighter cross timljers holds the center pin.The tower is hoisted by hand from the outside of the car, using floor at the rear end grips the fifth wheel tightly and prevents tilt-ing or accidental rotation. No mechanical means are provided forrotating the platform as one man can move it easily by hand. Thesecars, which have been in successful operation for a few months weredesigned jointly by the line and mechanical departnienis of theBrooklyn Heights Railro
