A BOVINE MOTOR. THE illustration herewith, an echo of days goneby, is of a motor not generally in use at any time,although in actual service for a long period onthe tracks of a southern city. Some years ago, and beforethe construction of the excellent electric system, whichnow operates modern palace cars at high speed along thestreets of Houston, Texas, the sight of a street car drawnby a gentle-eyed cow was so common an occurrence asnot to arouse attention, or comment, save from strangersto whom the combination was highly suggestive of theridiculous. Progress has now forever banished the bovine to thepasture, and steam, through the agency of electricity, haswrought its mighty transformation. There are still many places where the service is little better than that illus-trated, where a determined effort can work a revolutionno less marked than was the transformation scene atHouston.
