. The fare is vastly less than that usually charged on moun-tain railways, being 25 cents for the round trip includingthe freedom of the pavilion with its musical and other attrac-tions. In order to protect the pedestrians of New Orleansagainst their own carelessness an ordinance has been intro-duced in the city council which provides that it shall beunlawful for any person to loiter or play on such parts ofany neutral ground, levee or street on which steam or elec-tric cars are operated. A fine of from two to ten dollars isprovided as a penalty. Cars of the Citizens Railway are running on thelines of the Detroit Railway while the cars of the lattercompany are being overhauled.

Street railway gossip has formed an unusually interestingsubject of conversation in Chicago during the past nionthinot only among street railway men, but the general publicas well. On the passage of the Allen bill local securitiesadvanced, and many expected President Yerkes would atonce apply for the 50 year extension which that law permits.He has not yet done so and appears to be in no great haste.A striking feature of the Allen hill was the provision madefor leasing or consolidation of companies, and that this willeventually be availed of to bring all the city transportationlines into one organization there is no doubt, and Mr. Yerkeswill be in control of such consolidation. This is expected toinclude all the surface and elevated lines within the cityproper, and their suburban connections.
