One of his speeches wasdelivered from the door of a harness shop nearGentryville, and one he made in the *01d CarterSchoolhouse.^ After this address he drovehome with Mr. Josiah Crawford—*01d BlueNose for whom he had pulled fodder to payan exorbitant price for Weemss *Life of Wash-ington, and in whose house his sister and hehad lived as hired girl and hired man. He de-lighted the old friends by asking about every-body, and being interested in the **old swim-ming-hole, Joness grocery where he had oftenargued and *held forth, the saw-pit, the oldmill, the blacksmith shop, whose owner, Mr.Baldwin, had told him some of his best stories, and where he once started in to learn the black-smiths trade. Text Appearing After Image:
ONE OF HIS SPEECHES WAS DELIVERED FROM THE DOOROF A HARNESS SHOP. Abraham Lincoln **My childhood ^s home I see againAnd sadder with the view; And still, as memory crowds the brain,Theres pleasure in it, too. Ah, Memory! thou midway worldTwixt earth and paradise,Where things decayed and loved ones lostIn dreamy shadows rise. And freed from all thats earthy, vile,Seems hallowed, pure and bright,Like scenes in some enchanted isle,All bathed in liquid light. TRYING TO SAVE BILLY FROM A BAD HABIT As Mr. Lincoln spent so much of his timeaway from Springfield he felt that he needed ayounger assistant to keep office and look afterhis cases in the different courts. He should nothave made Billy Herndon an equal partner, but he did so, though the young man had neitherthe ability nor experience to earn anything likehalf the income of the office. If Herndon hadkept sober and done his best he might have madesome return for all that Mr. Lincoln, whotreated him like a foster-father, was trying todo for
