as-terns must be long, and set at an angle of 45°from the hoof head to the fetlock joint. Toolong a pastern is very objectionable, but veryseldom seen. A weakness to be guarded againstis what is termed calf knees, that is the forma-tion from the knee to the ground which beginswith the knee being set back, giving an appear-ance of angle which is delusive, because it isnot the angle from the fetlock joint to the hoofhead which relieves pressure on the foot, butan angle from the knee to the hoof head whichis a weakness, and unsightly. A Clydesdaleshould have a nice open forehead, broad be-tween the eyes; a flat, neither Roman-nosednor dished profile, a wide muzzle, large nos-trils, a bright, clear, intelligent eye, a big ear,and a well-arched long neck springing out ofan oblique shoulder, with high withers.
